When I lived in Brooklyn, NY and needed to get the hell out of the city, I would occasionally hop in my car and take the long journey to East Marion, NY to visit the lavender farms and have a crab cake at the seafood place nearby, or to Amagansett to spend time at the wildlife refuge and grab a cheeseburger on my way out.
I never had enough money to stay overnight or at a hotel, but I’m a freak for long drives and cherished the hours devoted to an audiobook, a podcast, or to good music in the car on the way to and from the island.
The main draw for me in going to these places was the chance to swim in the sound and the sea. I was amazed that you could just pull off the side of the road and hop in the shallow, warmed tides during the summer months, and (again) I was happy to drive multiple hours for the privilege.
It was in Amagansett on one of these roadside swim stops that I first encountered a wild rose bush, specifically Rosa rugosa.
