My daughter, a Pisces, was born on February 22nd, nearly three years ago. She came into the world via a scheduled C-section, while Joni Mitchell’s Come in from the Cold played.

My partner and I had been listening to that song over and over again in the weeks leading up to our kiddo’s birth, and added it to our birth playlist just a few days before she was born. They hit shuffle in the delivery room, and that’s the song that happened to pop up. I remember how delighted I felt when I heard those first notes.

At first glance, lyrically speaking, Come in from the Cold is an odd song to be born to. We mused and puzzled for a long time about why that song felt so right for this big threshold.

In it, Joni sings about having to dance a foot apart from her date during her Catholic school days, and about the failure of her generation to enact real revolutionary change, among other things. She sings about longing for touch, for the burn of desire, for connection and warmth in all of its forms.

“All we ever wanted

Was just to come in from the cold”

It sounds deeply cheesy and lame, but our kid really did bring us in from a cold that we didn’t realize we were in.

With her entrance into this realm, she brought community and beloved friends that we never would have met without being her parents. She brought in various forms of support that we never would have reached for without her. She brought singing, goofy games, uproarious laughter, tenderness, openness of heart, deeper talks, a better work/life balance (which says a lot about where we were with our work/life balance before we became parents) into our lives, among so many other gifts.

There are certainly plenty of challenges and struggles to be sure, but overall, it’s been the honor of a lifetime to be L’s parent.

This particular Pisces season is a bit like a door opening to a warm, lighted, deliciously cozy inn on a freezing cold night that we didn’t exactly realize that we were standing or residing in. It is a strong wake up, and a watershed moment in our soul’s evolution, both personally and collectively. We have outgrown something without quite being aware of it, and Pisces season is not only going to show us what that might be, but also help us to tend to ourselves while we move through the process of releasing it.

A skin is ready to be shed in service of our continued growth, and we are ready to let it go. This season – our last in this particular zodiac spiral – will help us along the way.

From around February 19th to March 20th, the sun will be in Pisces, and during that time, we will be moving through and working with the Tarot energies that are connected to Pisces, as well as the Tarot energies that showed up for us in our collective Tarot reading for Pisces season.
