The theme for the month of October is Waiting
October is always a powerful month – how could any month that contains the threshold into Samhain not be? – but this one is particularly potent. There is a lot of change happening in and around us this month, but in a slightly less direct way, thanks to our Tarot anchor of the month.
Wheel of Fortune is our card for October, which is also a very unique form of change energy. In Wheel of Fortune, we learn to co-collaborate with Divine, or Spirit, or the Unknown/Universe. That means that we control what we can, and don’t attempt to grip onto things that are outside of our awareness, our sight, or our agency. This takes a remarkable amount of presence, surrender, and openness to the unknown. It is also the reason why a deeply cosmic card like Wheel of Fortune can seem so mundane when we’re in the midst of it. We’re not really a part of the cosmic mystery that swirls around behind the curtain with this card. We’re more at the center of the wheel, taking care of the things that need our attention – taking the car in to be serviced, folding the laundry, writing, being with our children, all while magic and change are brewing beyond the veil. Over time, the weaving of our work and Spirit’s work in Wheel of Fortune yields to something new and magnificent (even if it didn’t feel particularly fresh and exciting as we experienced it). This dissonance between how things feel and what actually springs forth from this time will likely be very pronounced in the coming month.
Our theme for October is Waiting because that’s likely going to be our primary experience in the month ahead. Waiting for news, for things to come to light, for things to start, and for things to come to an end. Little do we know that the waiting itself transforms us, softens us, prepares us for the new. Our job will be to trust in the process, and to know that — while potentially uncomfortable — there’s absolutely nothing wrong with waiting and allowing things to ripen on their time.
How can we take exquisite care of ourselves in the midst of this? What support can we call upon? What action might feel aligned to us?

How to best work with the energy of the month ahead: FOUR OF WANDS
I just gifted my partner an early 40th birthday present – The Ninja SLUSHi machine. They live for slush drinks, and the moment I laid eyes on it I knew it would be the perfect present for them. They were so excited about it that they opened it a month early and are currently enjoying a frozen margarita as I draft this piece.
“You know,” they remarked after taking a sip, “this is the first birthday gift I’ve asked for in at least ten years that is just purely for pleasure. It has nothing to do with work, just enjoyment.”
That, in essence, is Four of Wands. It’s also going to be the best way to work with the energy in the month of October.
Four of Wands is a very special and unique frequency. The Fours themselves are like little pockets of deep restoration and renewal. When we receive a Four in the Tarot, it is a call to curl up into a metaphorical soul-fort with all of our coziest resources and sink in, allowing ourselves to be refueled in some much needed ways.
Four of Wands is exceptional within the spectrum of the Fours because it is an appeal to have fun for fun’s sake as an act of deep fortification. It’s your version of that slushy machine, and it wants you to reach for whatever form of pleasure is accessible for you. It reminds us that fun, laughter, and joy are medicine. They make life worth living. The best way to work with the energy of October – a month full of change, transformation, deep process, and waiting – is to prioritize joy and delight in our lives wherever possible.
What kind of support can we call upon for the month ahead? TEN OF PENTACLES
The single most supportive thing we can do for ourselves in October is to ritualize the endings, changes, and completions that are coming around the bend for us this month.
October is a very transformative month. One of the most beautiful and beneficial ways to mark and honor big changes, rites of passage, and transformations is to lean into the medicine of ritual and ceremony. In this kind of holy space, we can grieve, rage, rejoice, express gratitude, celebrate, and be held. This is one of the places where Ten of Pentacles shines most brightly.
Ten of Pentacles, like all tens, is possessed of a kind of Full Moon-like energy. It usually shows up when we’re simultaneously wrapping up an old cycle while leaping into a new one. With Ten of Pentacles specifically, we are invited to honor and ritualize what we’re letting go of, and reflect on what we’ve learned from the past cycle. What are we keeping from that last cycle – what worked about it? What didn’t work? What are we composting, clearing, and releasing? What are we storing, feasting upon, or planting for a new cycle to come?
If we feel a little stuck or lost in October, Ten of Pentacles can help. It can assist us in turning toward the things we are grateful for, what matters to us, and to the medicine of ceremony. If things are moving really fast in October, and it feels a little overwhelming, Ten of Pentacles can help there, too. We can always slow down a little bit, regroup, and come back to center. We can call upon our beloveds and support systems, the things that really nourish us and help us to feel held.
What can we reach for more of this month? FOUR OF PENTACLES
In the midst of October’s big (and slow) changes, we want to lean into our sacred, holy boundaries as much as possible. Don’t go out if your body says no. Don’t feel like you have to stay home if you feel called to go out. Be clear about who and what feels like a yes or a no for you to be around. Be gentle with yourself, and trust in your body.
Four of Pentacles is a card that often shows up when we’re being invited to give ourselves some space, especially physically. This space is crucial, and is often needed in order to process, heal, clear, and make space. Sometimes it’s just needed because we need it. Regardless of how it shows up for you, Four of Pentacles is a blissfully simple card at its core: give yourself time and space where you need it, and let your body be surrounded by people that you trust and love to the best of your ability.
What can we let go of that no longer serves us: PAGE OF CUPS
Page of Cups is a card of inner child work, of sweet play and imagination. Like all of the Pages, it is a root, a compass – a return to self.
It’s not necessarily that we need to shy away from our inner child, or say no to opportunities to play and to tune in with our imagination this month. It’s just not necessarily the focus of the cycle ahead, and I’ll explain why.
If Four of Wands is the best way to work with the month ahead, and Ten of Pentacles is the support we can call upon this month, and Four of Pentacles is what we’re drawing in, this paints a powerful picture.
The weaving of these three cards suggests that deep restoration, space, and reflection are the medicine we need in the month of October.
Four of Wands and Page of Cups are both playful energies, albeit in different (and sometimes co-existing) ways. Page of Cups is an invitation to tend to the needs of the inner child, and to allow ourselves the freedom to live in closer proximity with this part of ourselves. Four of Wands is an invitation to lean into more pleasure, play, and fun in our lives, in both sweet and challenging times. Both cards are closely related, but different in a granular way. Four of Pentacles wants to take pressure and stress off of the physical vessel that we inhabit, and Ten of Pentacles is going to keep us closely tethered to resources that help us to move through transition and change in an easeful way.
So, again, Page of Cups being here in this position doesn’t mean we’re pushing away a good thing. It’s just not necessarily what we will need most in this season. We can have peach pie and apple pie on the table. If we’re not feeling stone fruit today, we will reach for the apple pie – it doesn’t mean that the peach pie is a problem.
Nourishment at the Crossroads: A Tarot Spread for OCTOBER
My card for the month ahead:
How can I best work with the energy of October?
How can I allow myself to decompress and rest through the month?
What kind of fun, play, and pleasure can I reach for through the month?
What card can help me to process and ritualize all of the big changes in the month ahead?
What card can help me to cultivate the patience to wait when I’m meant to this month?
This really resonates. We just found out about some changes coming (beyond our control) that majorly affects our small art business. The next step is unclear right now- but I know that in my life when things like this happen it’s because there’s something so much better in store. So I get the waiting part. My October spread was weird though. The first 2 pulls have me confused. I was hoping to get some reassurance for the universe that good things are coming, ect.
How can I best work with the energy of October? Seven of wands rx.
Maybe I need to see where I’m being defensive and question whether there’s a real danger or just a knee jerk fear?
How can I allow myself to decompress and rest through the month?
9 of swords- I know there’s no bad cards- but.. 😂 seriously? I know the tarot is not telling me to decompress by feeling anxiety! Must be the opposite.
October’s monthly medicine was just so on point. I was saying out loud “ What!?How?!!!” 🤯♥️ Thank you for being our teacher extraordinaire!
