One of the most impactful moments from my Death Doula training with Going with Grace was an interview/lesson that Alua Arthur (the founder of GWG) conducted with a palliative care doctor.
The intention of the conversation was centered on helping folks to get acclimated to what it can generally look like when someone is days or hours away from dying. One of the things that this palliative care doctor spoke about was the prevalence of end-of-life visions in their patients: folks making space in their hospital rooms or beds for animals or loved ones who had previously passed away, or them making mention of a train ticket or bus ticket that they needed to secure, and how important it was that they do so – that they were going on a journey very soon, and couldn’t be late for it.
The palliative care doctor paused after describing some of those more common end-of-life visions, and then said, “it almost seems, in many cases, that there is a welcoming party for people who are dying1.”
Scorpio season is the welcoming party. It is the time on the Wheel of the Year where the veil is the thinnest, where there is the least degree of felt separation between us and our Spirit helpers. It is not an accident that so many cultures around the world honor and pay homage to their ancestors and beloved dead during Scorpio season. During this time, we too are invited to tune into these deeper layers, to remember where we come from and who we may be a part of our welcoming party when we return back home to the realm beyond the veil.
Scorpio energy is so profoundly tender, and is rarely acknowledged for possessing this kind of sweet sensitivity. To bow to the immortal words of Jenny Helzer, we are always benefitted by our willingness to remain tethered to our tenderness, in spite of how absolutely foolish that might seem, especially in the face of continued horrors around the world, and the looming presence of the election here in the United States. Can we continue to keep the door to our hearts cracked in spite of so much uncertainty, suffering, and pain?
From around October 23rd to November 21st, the sun will be in Scorpio, and during that time, we will be moving through and working with the Tarot energies that are connected to Scorpio, as well as the Tarot energies that showed up for us in our collective Tarot reading for Scorpio season.
